Drink Well: The ISAW Alliance

International Society of Africans in Wine, Inc.

International Society of Africans in Wine, Inc. (a for-profit subsidiary solely owned by the ISAW Foundation) was organized to compliment the efforts of the ISAW Foundation within the marketplace.
ISAW has forged important alliances with members of the South African wine community who share our vision for social transformation. The wines in the ISAW portfolio represent exceptional quality, value, and the work of the men and women reshaping the South African wine industry.

Heritage Link Brands: Since our inception, Heritage Link Brands has been a key ally for ISAW. The company is the sole US importer dedicated to the import and distribution of wine from the African continent and its Diaspora. Harvard MBA’s, Selena Cuffe, CEO and her husband Khary, CFO, founded the company in 2005 after a visit to the annual wine festival in Soweto. When Selena discovered the wines she loved were not available in the US, she launched Heritage Link Brands and in just a few years, the company has grown their distribution into 40 states. Heritage Link Brands' expanded portfolio also showcases wine harvested by vintners of African descent throughout the world.

M'Hudi: In 2003, Malmsey and Diale "Oupa" Rangaka left their careers in medicine and academia and moved to the Western Cape. After several months of searching, they finally procured a 103 acre wine and fruit farm outside of Stellenbosch, South Africa. The move to Stellenbosch was courageous and inspired. Miraculously, the Ranganka family is the only black-owned family vineyard in South Africa! The family has made tremendous sacrifices to accomplish their dream of starting a winery, and ISAW works feverishly to see that these brave pioneers have a lasting impact in Stellenbosch and beyond.

  • M'hudi Sauvignon Blanc
  • M'hudi Pinotage

Seven Sisters: The story of Seven Sisters is so powerful we are compelled to share it at each opportunity. The Brutus family was raised in the small fishing village of Paternoster, on the western coast of South Africa. In 1983, their father lost his job as a fisherman after 20 years.  The Brutus sisters were forced to separate and leave the fishing village to move in with other family members. They yearned to return, but were not able to do so given the unfavorable economic circumstances.  Over twenty years later, the sisters reunited and set out to establish a family business and started their own wine company in 2005.  Each of their seven wines is distinct, carefully selected to match the styles and personalities of each of the seven sisters.  ISAW seeks to support these courageous women by sharing their story and wonderful wines.

Solms Delta:  Solms Delta is a great example of South Africa's unsung heroes that are making great progress in healing race relations and creating opportunities for vineyard workers. Professor Mark Solms is an internationally renowned neuroscientist who inherited his family’s wine business. Mark, a native South African, was conflicted with the bitter legacy of apartheid and slavery in South Africa's past, and established the Win de Caab Trust, which represents the historically disadvantaged tenant-workers on the estate. Using loan funding secured by the Solms and Astor families, the Employee Trust purchased an adjoining farm, Deltameer, and linked it with another neighboring property, Lubeck, owned by the Astors. The Solms' , Astors',  and the Trust thus became equal partners in a greatly expanded enterprise. When you spend time on the Solms-Delta farm, it is unquestionable that the people here are mutually committed to the success of their collective enterprise, and the quality of people is rivaled only by the quality of their astonishing wines.

Bouwland: The Bouwland winery is owned and run by farm workers, who, through an exciting empowerment project, bought the majority of the shares in the property. It is situated on the famous, historic slopes where the Stellenbosch Simonsberg region delivers arguably the finest wines in South Africa; Bouwland is a cooperative of 39 black families that spans over 120 acres of prime vineyards of noble red varietals.
The inspiration behind the project is to create true agricultural and economic empowerment for future generations of the community that has been part of the country’s wine culture since the first vines were planted in 1659. This is for Bordeaux lovers!
